Venezuelan Soul Food
with an American Twist

What’s an Arepa?

/ur • ay • puh/

Arepas are grilled corn cakes stuffed with an array of different savory fillings. They are quintessentially Venezuelan.

In fact, in Venezuela there’s a common saying: “You are born with two arepas under your arms.” You’d be hard pressed to find an American equivalent that accurately describes just how essential the handheld, eat-it-any-time-of-day snack is in Venezuelan culture.

Meet Juan

Five years ago, Chef Juan Mejias emigrated to the US from his native Venezuela in search of something better: a secure lifestyle far removed from the corruption and violence that plagues his country. His dream is to one day open a restaurant here. A food truck will do for now, he jokes.

His passion from a young age has been cooking – a love nurtured by his mother and grandmother, and fueled by a tireless work ethic. What motivates Juan in the kitchen is putting a smile on people’s face, and sharing a bit of his culture, too. There’s no greater joy for him than making someone happy through his food. Cooking, he believes, is how you show love; it’s how you show you care.

And Juan cares… a lot! It shines through in the quality of his ingredients, the enthusiasm behind his food, and even in the names he gives his dishes. He decided to name each of his popular arepas after someone special in his life. A recognition that a solid support system is everything.

Love, Family & Food.
